FOCUS AREAS
This area recognizes the intersection of society and ethics, and promotes fair and transparent systems of governance, education, values, rights and entitlements, and is largely responsible for societal stability and creating a forum for healthy communities to exist. Major threads within this focus area include: civics education, objective and ethical journalism, protecting First Amendment rights, property rights, tax policy, net neutrality, and statesmanship and a return to the middle.
CIVIL SOCIETY
WILDLIFE & ENVIRONMENT
The foundation recognizes that the health of the environment is the single most important indicator of human health and societal well-being. Conversely, destruction of the environment is analogous to our own destruction. Moving society toward a symbiotic relationship with our surroundings has healing potential on physical and spiritual levels. As our planet comes into balance, human crises of disconnection, addiction, and alienation cannot help but be affected in positive ways.
ARTS / ARTS EDUCATION
Creativity is essential to human innovation and indicative of whole-brain thinking. Without creativity, society suffers in various ways, and especially within the fabric of institutions and leadership. D27 recognizes art as a worthy partner balancing education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). D27 also seeks to support art experiences for the community at large, that have the potential to enrich society. The founder spent two high-school years in an arts school, and reflects on that experience as among the most impactful of his life.
VICTIMLESS CRIMES
PROTECTING THE VULNERABLE
The foundation recognizes the difference between criminal behavior that victimizes members of the community, and actions defined as criminal that bear risk chiefly for the perpetrator. The latter are “victimless crimes.” The foundation supports destigmatizing victimless crimes (e.g., psychedelic drugs) and supports more effective solutions in that arena. D27 seeks to help by providing resources, education, and research in areas of concern.
LOCAL LEGACY
With this category, D27 extends gratitude to local non-profits that do outstanding work regionally, and that are recognized leaders in serving the community. Though these organizations may fall out of our delineated areas of focus or break from the types of groups we normally fund, this is an effort to materialize our vision of bringing all groups and people up together.
FOUNDER INTERESTS
This is a place for personal interests of the founder that don’t currently have the same level of focus and resource attention as the other areas. Emerging organizational interests may first be tested here, and this category allows for responsive giving in moments of unforeseen types of need. Some of the most exciting organizations and significant funding have occurred in this arena.
